Test photo shoot

For this photo shoot I was given the task of choosing a colour then choosing an emotion that I associate with it I chose black and wanted to show off quite a depressed fragile look. I'm really happy with my first photo shoot although I'm glad it was a test run because their are things I would change to improve my final look such as removing all jewelry and nail vanish to not distract from the main aspect and have softer looking makeup and I wont contour then nose as much because It didn't photograph as well as it looked in person and to do slightly softer eyes to really enhance the fragile look. But I'm glad that I've noticed this before my main photo shoot.  And I want to experiment further with the poses and research more types of poses.

Over view of actresses that have played Elizabeth

Bette Davies in the 'Virgin Queen'

I think Bette Davies transformation is one of my favourites as its such a dramatic one because she was and iconic woman known for her beauty that felt so passionately about playing Elizabeth she shaved her eyebrows off cut back her hair line to truely achieve and authentic look not caring that she was known for her beauty. The transformation is amazing as you can't tell its her.

Anne Marie Duff's transformation into Elizabeth is another one of my favorites as it's more modern and The use of wigs and how they make the hairline further back and the slight contouring really works well as its simplistic and more 'human' looking than the other looks I've seen. I will take in consideration these transformations while planning my final looks.

drawing!

I really feel the introduction to drawing was helpful as I understand that it will help me further on with make-up And as I like to draw I enjoyed the lesson and reminded me of the basics of shading which I feel will help me with contouring. We went over basic shapes how to hold your pencil correctly which I didn't know before hand and how to be more confident with our movements. Starting off with the basic line drawings helped loosen me up for the rest of the  tasks. this was my work further  progressed As I haven't drawn in awhile I feel it was good to go back to the basics then work towards this I'm going to carry on practicing as I want to progress further.

Extended drawing at home
At home I drew a fruit bowl trying to make it seem more realistic I feel it went ok although I understand that it still needs more working on but after the lesson in class I'm more confident. I used the combination of pencils such as 2B, 6B 2H  to create the drawing and then used my rubber as a high lighter.

Elizabeth I in coronation robes
One of my favourite things about Elizabeth the 1st is how she controlled her image to others and
dictated how she looked to the outside world and promoting her best features. I choose this
image as it was her coronation so most of England would have seen or heard about this
image I love how her tiny waste and pale complection is emphasized  as having pale skin
was seen as a sign of riches because only poor people would catch a tan as they would be
working outside in the sun while the rich would be indoors. her hair long and down indicates
innocents and virginity the jewels showing the wealth the other items
adding to her royal status. The ermies and crown symbolises her royality the cross shows
her dedication to God and the church. The type of clothing shes wearing is very expensive
and rich looking I feel the painter was trying to portray the wealth and honour of England
at the time and how shes pure becoming a queen.

My own self portrait

I choose this image to represent myself as I want to travel the world with my career, visit more countries and experience different cultures. Also in this image I'm wearing my favourite necklace that my mother gave to me so It has part of my family with me which represents that family and friends are important to me, also this image was taking a week before me moving to Southampton and will always remind me of one of the most amazing weekends of my life as I seen Beyonce and Jay-z preform there. Although there isn't that many obvious personal items in this image I feel it does portay where I want to be in the future visiting other countries as a make-up artist.  Also as Paris is one of the fashion capitals in the world it shows how much I love fashion and how one day I would love to be part of Paris fashion week.

Face Charts

This is my first attempt of a face chart I'm pleased with the outcome, I used different shades of blue for the extreme contouring look and I added black for extra effect. It could be improved further as it was my first attempt I feel the more I practice the better my outcomes will be as I aim to progress further.

Halloween Make-up

Experimenting with day of the dead Halloween make-up

In class we were given different designs of day of the dead make-up we had to choose which one we wanted to do then interpret it onto our model. I really enjoyed doing this although we didn't have that long to do the look I'm quite pleased with the out come I  feel the eyes have blended well although I would have liked to have had longer to perfect the final outcome and add the final details I would like to progress and try different looks with the design.I liked the freedom of doing this and feel it went well if I had longer time I would have made the heart more symmetrical. I used illmasaqua skin base foundation and Kryolan Supa colour for the other parts I like the blending of the eyes and the slight contouring. I used the illamasqua white foundation as my base blended into the ears then started adding the features then after I felt I was finished I used powder to set it. I would like to experiment further because I think make-up like this will always be useful in knowing how to do.

Outside class Halloween experiments
I used liquid latex and tissue paper to create a hole effect on my flatmates neck, I built up the layers to make it appear deeper using a hair dryer to set each layer to speed up the process
This is how it turned out I'm really pleased with the out come I used supa colour, mac lip mix and fake blood to achieve the look my favorite aspect was the hole in the neck I feel it worked with the idea I had in my head and looked realistic in person. Aspects that I would change are adding more texture to the sides of the neck and making sure of the placement as the mood rubbed onto the chin so I had to clean it up a few times.

another look was 'half zombie' I basically did the same technique using liquid latex and tissue paper to build the shape I do like the end look although I would spend more time on blending in the green. I really enjoyed halloween as I experimented with different looks and techniques
that I usually wouldnt use.

Royal Portrait

I've chosen This image of the duke and duches of Cambridge prince William, Kate

Middleton and their child prince George on his christening. The artical is labeled  '' A portrait of a modern monarchy'' and was taken on the 24th of October 2013. The first thing I noticed from this Image is Prince George as Kate and William are posed very elegantly and George being a baby is full of energy and they look like happy family.

The outfits are the second thing I noticed as it shows a united front with Kate and George wearing the same colours and wearing a suit that blends with the team, Also George's outfit is very traditional which gives of the feel of royalty.
Throughout the Image there's indicators of wealth the background is simplistic, very bright but gives off the image of wealth with the gold on the settee.
The image is obviously a posed family portrait which gives the vibe of them being a very in love couple with their very happy child. The composition of the photo is straight forward with very little shadow which does give off a happier appearance.
I feel that this photograph gives off the impression of a united, loving family which I feel that the photographer has successfully portrayed without making the image relatable to the public by portraying a typical family portrait.

Extreme contouring

This is the demonstration we had in class which I feel is really effective and works well and inspired me to experiment further
This is my own version I feel it went quite well for my first go although it needs some re adjustments such as I could blend even further and and experiment further I would like to progress and try more looks  and perfect the contouring look. firstly

'Products I used for this were:
·         Illamasqua skin base foundation
·         Illamasqua matt primer
·         Illamasqua loose powder
·         Kryolan eye shadow pallet I choose ‘black pepper’

After cleansing, toning and moisturising the face I then used illamasqua mat primer left that to absorb into the skin then applied Illamasqua skin base foundation I then powdered with illamasqua loose powder to set it.

I started contouring I wanted the contouring to be quite obvious so I then felt where my cheek bone was applied ‘black pepper’ there and started buffing downwards in a circular motion taking it down my cheek bone but not reaching where my mouth starts.

I contoured my eye going outwards using the same circular motion with my brush and then the bridges of my nose and slightly at the tip of it the temples of my forehead to make it seem smaller and my cupids bow to give my lips more depth.

I wanted to expand on my extreme contouring so I did on my model for my photo shoot this was the result.
I feel I improved on this although next time I will blend more on the nose area to give a softer effect.

Colour matching and natural contouring anc concealer

Everyone has different tones and pigments within their skin such as you can have:
·         Fair skin colouring
·         Light skin colouring
·         Olive skin colouring
·         Brown skin colouring

·         Black skin colouring

To successfully colour match mixing colours usually helps as there’s different shades within someone’s face to get the best match apply the colour firstly on the edge of your models chin down to their neck so you can see if you have the right colour if it blends perfectly with the skin. It’s better to try out lighter then add darker because you can always add bronzer to give your client some more colouring but it’s most important to get the base colour correct.
From this image you can see I’ve done half of my models face. I applied my makeup to the left side I feel it’s a perfect colour match as you can hardly see the line I choose this image to show how ‘natural’ you can do your make-up I feel this had been a success. Once I had found the base colour I applied it then really buffed it into the skin to give a more polished look.
I used Kryolan foundation pallet for my client combing 1 Ajoster and 617 to get the colour correct.
After that I then used concealer to get rid of the dark circles I used D3. My client also had a few red areas and imperfections so I used the green concealer to hide them as green takes down redness and it was D1
After applying I set it with Illamasqua loose powder to get rid of the shine and make it look more natural I dabbed it on with a sponge also I powdered as I wanted to do a natural contouring and you can’t apply powder once you’ve used grease foundation ‘grease on grease powder on powder’ works the best.
CONTOURING AND HIGHLIGHTING
·         Contouring brings features in
·         Highlighting brings features out
I found where my clients cheek bone was asked her to suck her cheeks in so I could follow them clearly and then applied ‘pale tan’ to her cheek bone going downwards but stopping before  reaching her mouth and then to the tops of her temple and slightly under her jaw line. I then applied ‘blush peach’ to the apples of her cheeks asking her to smile as a guide line.

I'm pleased with my first attempt and feel I matched her skin very well and you can see how it blends into her natural skin colour as I only did half a face make-up next time I want to concentrate on the concealer as it's still quite dark under the eyes and I want to experiment more contouring. I learnt that to check if the colour blends with the natural skin colouring is to apply to the chin and see if it blends into the neck. I do like that it's half face as you can see natural vs natural makeup which I'm pleased with.

Colour theory

As a Make-up artist colour theory is an important factor as due to the brief you have been given you would have to work around so many different aspects of colours. And it will help you match up different skin tones and pigments.
Color Wheel
Primary colours are yellow, blue and red
Complentary colours are the colours opposite each other on the colour wheel.
Analogous colours  are the colours that are found right next to eachother and are usually in the same family  of colours.

Tudor makeup

Elizabeth was the most iconic woman during her rein every woman aimed to look like her. With her skin already pale it gave her a sense of wealth as only the rich would be pale with the 'common' people being tanned from working outside so women would paint themselves white to try and achieve the  image that they were wealthy to achieve they would have too mix together the following ingredients to create it.
Egg whites
Powdered egg shells
Alum
Borax
White poppy seeds
This would bleach the skin, If it was applied too often it would damage the skin and almost scar it It was very common for women to completely cover themselves in the 'paint' they would also paint blue veins to seem even paler which is ironic as in this generation there are so many products to enhance tan and give you a fake one.

 Rouge was used on the lips and cheeks the ingredients needed were;
Vermillion (red crystalline mercuric sulphite)
Gum Arabic
Egg white
Milk from figs
This wasnt healthy for the skin and could damage it quite easy. Elizabeth used Cochineal for her lipstick cochineal is Mexican beetles blood.

The Westmore family

The Westmore family are make-up royalty they have created some of the most iconic looks in film such as; Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.''We’ve got a few monsters in our background,"says Marvin Westmore, part of the third generation of the family. So you can see how their famiy has a strong passion for hair and make-up for it to be passed down through 3 generations. They have also worked with some of the most well know actresses such as ;Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Sandra Dee and Farrah Fawcett.Ern  Westmore even won the award for best hair and makeup for  his make-up on the film “Cimarron.

I really admire the Westmore family as they have generations of accomplished make-up artist's within their family they've even had oscars given to them for the amazing transformations.

Elizabethans

When I hear the word Elizabethan I automatically think of an image like this I quite Iconic image of Queen Elizabeth pale face to symbolize how rich she is frizzy red hair and rouge lips. I love how fashion today has brought the look back to life with a flamboyant edge too it again for example Vivienne west wood's run way show...

http://www.freestylemagazine.co.uk/blog/2011/03/04/lfw-highlights-of-day-1
Although this is more modern you still get the Elizabethan vibe from it I personally love the look adore the hair the texture of it screams Queen Elizabeth the makeup enhances the feel to it is well. the dark eyes and lack of eyebrows really adds too the height of the hair especially the collar of the outfit.

Induction to project brief

I'm Megan Owen I'm 18 years old and an aspiring make-up artist I haven't got allot of experience professionally with in the industry although I have an artistic background where I did art and design in college and I also took hair and beauty as one of my GCSE'S. Although I haven't had that much experience in the industry it is my biggest passion.
The Elizabethan era I know slightly about As I've seen  Vivienne west wood run way looks that were based around Queen Elizabeth.

I love the take she has on the Elizabethan era the glamour of it all is striking And I think her looks will be my main inspiration throughout my project. I am also really looking forward into looking into the Elizabethan era in more depth. My aspirations for this project is to successfully produce a look that is Elizabethan and for myself to be proud of it my fears are that I wont be able to grasp the hair styling as I feel thats my main weakness.

Induction week

On induction week we Illamasqua and charles fox come in and demonstrate their products. They really inspired me as Illamasqua showed how passionate they were and did a demonstration on one of us which looked amazing,

They also showed us the competitions we could enter next year which was really exciting. They gave us a chance to win to be one of there assistants the task was to work in a group and create a look with the products they had given us then we had to create a story from our look then sell it to everyone. This thought me alot as I realized time management is such an important factor and that I had to be constantly aware of how long I had left.

The other task we had during induction week linked in with our summer project we had to create a face on a bag symbolizing who we want to be in five years I really enjoyed this class as it really made me think creatively.
My one is the one with the blue graduation hat and I was really pleased with my outcome.

Summer project

Over the summer we were given the task of creating a mood board to represent where we would like to see ourselves in 5 years time. For example I want to travel with my job and would also like to either start of working for mac or illamasqua then maybe start up my own brand.I liked creating the mood board although if i were to do it again I would add more images and develop my ideas further.

The otherside of the project was to review two films from the list that was given. I decided to review Funny Face and The Great Gastby, I really enjoyed reviewing the films as I liked breaking down the storyline and really looking into the style and make-up of both films.
